Right Behind the Ears!

Thursday, August 15, 2013

I scratched our cat right behind the ears and said, “You have such an incredible life, and you don’t even know you’re living it”. It was truly an “OMG” moment as I immediately sensed a Heavenly Voice saying the exact same thing to me! In an instant, I became mindful of the incredible blessings that I too am living, often without complete awareness, or full appreciation. How about you? Do you need a little scratch behind your ears? Wake up, dig in, and savor every single morsel of this delicious life before you.

Please Judge Me

Saturday, August 10, 2013

It’s incorrect to judge, right? Wrong! We have intellect, conscience, and a heart. For me, that’s evidence that we are supposed to make judgments all day long. We don’t condemn. We don’t form prejudice. We don’t hurt people. We judge to love people! We have intellect, conscience, and heart to apply to ourselves, and to our relationships, for the good of all concerned. We imply love when we say, “Look, what you’re doing is wrong. I want you to stop”. Parents do it for kids. And when they grow up, kids should do it for their parents. We should all do it for each other. To judge creates a boundary, and the last I checked, boundaries are a good thing because they support deeper knowing and intimacy. And by the way, when we say, “Great job”, we have indeed made a judgment. Please judge me. If you don’t, I’ll come to believe you don’t care.

Looking for "Yes"

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

Okay, so I live in Tampa Bay, Florida. It’s mid-July, near “ninety”, and there are black, lightening-filled afternoon storms blowing all around. Fresh from a workout by the water, sweating profusely, I hop in my car, turn the key, and the battery is “dead”! My first thought is, “jumper cables”. I need “JUMPER CABLES”! Those of you living up north might say, “And your problem is? EVERYONE has jumper cables”. Problem is, I live in FLORIDA, and NO ONE has jumper cables in Florida. No one NEEDS jumper cables in Florida! So I say to myself, “We can do this”, and I go in quest of jumper cables, inquiring of people sitting on beach chairs, “lubed”, tanned and watching the weather for signs that they should run for cover. Odds WAY against me, and feeling a bit foolish, I ask THE SECOND PERSON, “By any chance, do you have jumper cables?” He pauses, looks at me “funny”, and says, “Yes”. Are you kidding me!!! What are the chances of THAT? So, what is the moral of the story? Step out, and do it in faith. Step out against all odds! Do it with a smile, and then, look for YOUR particular “Yes”.

Growing Up

Saturday, June 22, 2013

I was asked to write a few thoughts about what it means to be “growing up”. This is my spontaneous, “straight from the heart” version.

“I’ve lived a full life, ‘taking notes’ along the way, and this is what I've discovered so far. You get out of your head, knowing you're not that smart. You get over yourself, knowing you're not that important. You learn to believe in someone or something much bigger than you are. Along the way, you heal, you grow, and then; you begin to give. You give back, because you took too much to begin with. You give ‘up’ because you’re grateful. You give forward, because of all that you have received. Finally, you learn to love to the fullest extend that you can, because love is the essence of all that truly matters.”

Certainly, my disclaimer is that I have not “arrived”. None of us ever do because “growing up” and learning to love is a process for which there is never a final, finished product. It’s also true that life is rich and full of blessings to the extent that we never tire of growing in love, and becoming “other minded” along the way. Day by day, give someone the blessing of a “deeper you”. They deserve it, and you do too!

Love Stays

Saturday, June 01, 2013

"In love” feels better than “love” so that’s why it’s easier to do. “In love” is easy since it requires little of us, except to feel good. “Love” on the other hand can be challenging because it asks us to get over ourselves. Since "in love” demands little from us, it feels good to make “forever” promises when we’re “there”, but to “love” when “in love” leaves is the ultimate test of who and what we really are. We all have defects in our capacity to love, so when “in love” leaves, we can leave with it, or we can stay, and face the "growing pains" of maturing as lovers. Learning to love is difficult, but here’s the good news! If we’re determined to grow in “love” when “in love” leaves, eventually, “in love” returns, deeper and sweeter than ever before. This is because love is a lot like nature, complete with distinct seasons, although they’re not quite as predictable. Ours is learning to accept, respect, and enjoy the flow, and here is an encouragement to help you along the way. In loving relationships, as with nature, the sun always shines again, the ice begins to melt, and “in love” returns as new life, more beautiful than ever before. If we nurture that hope, it will help us to “stay the course” during the darker seasons. Remember, real “love” stays when “in love” leaves.

Feeding

Sunday, April 28, 2013

Have you ever heard the phrase, “We feed off of each other”? I have, at least a gazillion times throughout the years. It means that two people feast on the negativity of one another, and then recreate it in never-ending and destructive cycles. So, what’s the remedy? That’s easy! Use the very same statement, but subtract the words, “off of”. What’s left is this. “We feed each other!” You see, relationships will always be about giving and receiving energy. Ideally, we take in energy from our positivity-giving habits, and then feed others with it as love and caring. If we’re busy overflowing with nourishing “food”, then we’re not as susceptible to feeding "off of" emotional garbage, and getting sick from it. Do you have a loved one who frustrates you from time to time? You probably do, because that's life, so remember; you have a fundamental decision-point to deal with every time the cycle begins to occur. You can feed off of it, and get sick, or you can feed them with higher love, and the two of you will thrive. I know this seems hard, but feast upon positive stuff, and then keep your "feel good" energy flowing by “feeding” others with it. Always be prepared to love. Love when you don’t feel like it, love when the other seems unlovely, and love, just because you can!

F+

Thursday, April 25, 2013

Lamenting his academic failings, I looked at him, and said, "Because ‘I’m @Encouraging’ (and a bit sarcastic), I would give you at least an F+ for your efforts." He immediately shot back, "Doesn't a ‘plus’ ruin the integrity of an ‘F’?" We both laughed, paused, and then staring at each other for a moment, I swear we were both thinking the same thought. "Inside of a person who thinks THAT quickly, THAT way lives an A+ student!" I decided to say it out loud, speaking “Life to potential,” and he appreciated the gift. Always remember, deep inside of our F+ struggles is an A+ something waiting to emerge. Seek it, find it, and when you do, give it a great big shout-out!

Live Confidently!

Sunday, April 21, 2013

Life is an ongoing process of discovery, so we’re constantly experiencing situations we’ve never faced before. For me, there doesn’t seem to be a day that goes by that I’m not presented with a brand new challenge! This is true for all of us, and while we rarely feel prepared for the next new thing, consider this. Has there ever been a challenge over which you did not ultimately prevail? I didn’t think so. Even though it doesn’t feel this way at times, deep inside, we have everything we need to live on the winning side of the street. In fact, you have resilience, resourcefulness, and drive that brought you victoriously to this time and place. This will always be the truth for your life, so embrace it, and live confidently!

Victories Are Waiting!

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

Placed on a waiting list, chosen to be “first choice” in the “second round” if someone dropped out, she said, “Oh great, now I’m the best of the worst”. A few weeks and an attitude adjustment later, she happily announced her own acceptance, to which I said, “Well, now you’re the worst of the best! Is that progress?” She laughed. So, what is the moral of the story? Despite appearances, our worst situations should be filled with positive anticipation. Look at your life as it is right now. Would you consider yourself “the best of the worst”, or “the worst of the best”? I hope neither. Remember, everything changes. Your life is a process that ebbs and flows, and only your judging makes it seem “good” or “bad”. In fact, judging can stop fresh victories from flooding into our lives when we need them the most! It’s always too soon to say whether it's “good” or “bad”, or “best” or “worst”, so be thankful for what you can in your present circumstances, and be passionately hopeful! Victories are always waiting to break through, and your attitude can determine their estimated time of arrival. I hope you’ll give that some real deep thought.

Quiet Roots

Saturday, March 30, 2013

Spring is a time of renewal when new life is budding everywhere! Yet, with all of these blossoms, and their promise of harvest, we must never forget the quiet roots that work through the dark seasons, providing strength for the blossoms to emerge and say, “I’m alive!” For every fresh victory blossoming in your life right now, there have been many “quiet root encouragers" along the way. Please take time to remember them, and to sincerely thank each and every one. “Thank you” is that special place where encouraging “quiet roots” and hopeful blossoms smile at the mysterious connectedness of life, and enjoy the harvest it brings.
